The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
