The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
