The musician donates £25,000 Mercury Prize to small live spaces

The star has handed over the complete sum of his £25k honor cash to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the UK's grassroots music venues.

He was presented with the award on October 16 as his third album his work was chosen as the best record of the previous year.

He has decided to hand the money over to the trust, in recognition of the crucial part local spots had in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, major artists like the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports local stages.

Fender also joined in, raising over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist 38 local spots across the UK.

These funds assisted locations that were facing possible closure due to issues arising from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted financial assistance in improving facilities and technical equipment that directly benefitted performers and audiences.

"The idea that money from shows in big venues backs the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has commented.

The musician is among several artists to contribute his honor winnings to good deeds.

In Pulp won the prize in the mid-90s for their record the album, lead singer Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would contribute their cash to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her bounty among a few organizations, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked updated gear," Ms Dynamite shared with a publication.

In recent years, they contributed their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Also 1994 winners M People donated their winnings to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the disease.

"The victory was ample," remarked singer Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected two small stages in that region, by placing them under public stewardship.

One venue in Southampton and the other in the city were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is backed by Arts Council England and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
