Trumpism's most revealing and defining moments – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size than the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing to build it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and this week a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.

Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you should give them your pullover as well.
The obvious and clear truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a type of radical love concentrated on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
So I have been encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance against Trump emerge in this past year. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. America is best defended, to put it differently, by relationship to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to what makes it unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most negative of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it represents both modesty and conviction, a blend that genuine national faithful ought to accept.
